Welcoming The Groom- A Ceremony In Itself

In an Indian wedding, bridegroom, his guests and relatives who form the procession called Baraat are given a warm welcome from the Bride’s side. The entire drama as it unfolds is amusing, interesting and sometimes absolutely hilarious! In a typical Indian Hindu wedding, the Bridegroom departs from his home to the wedding venue with a huge retinue. He sits on a white horse with bands playing music and the procession dancing to the beats of dhol. It is a carnival of a sort. All from Groom’s side mention the time of baraat departure.

As the congregation reaches wedding venue, bride’s father, brother and maternal uncle welcome all of them with flower garlands and hugs. This ceremony is popularly called ‘Milni’. A priest conducts a small Pooja to ward off the evil spirits at the entrance thus the name “Dwar Pooja”. Thereafter, mother of the bride does aarti of the groom and smears a red tika on his forehead. In a few cultures, to tease the groom she tries to pinch his nose as well! Entering the wedding venue is not easy for the groom as siblings and cousins of the bride form a barricade at the entrance. They ask for gifts and money in exchange for a passage to the groom and his baraat. This isa fun time as groom offers money and the barricade refuses asking him to increase the amount. Finally every one reaches a deal and the groom is let in.

In many regions, the groom is given a bath after reaching the bride’s home or wedding venue. Thereafter he dresses up in a Joda- the attire for the wedding gifted by the bride’s parents.It is hereafter that bride makes an appearance usually on the stage where the ceremony of garlanding known as ‘Varmala’ takes place.
