Anand Karaj – A Sneak Peek Into Sikh Wedding Rituals

Sikhs do not consult horoscopes and they do not follow any specific auspicious time or period for their wedding ceremony. On the pre meditated day the couple along with their family members reach gurudwara where women and men sit separately. Bride and Groom are required to sit in front of the gathering closer to Shri Guru Granth Sahib- holy book of Sikhs. The priest conducts Ardas in which the couple along with their parents participate together.

A Sikh couple goes around the Guru Granth Sahib four times as the four stanzas of Lavan hymns of Guru Ramdas are recited by the priest. After each recitation, couple has to go around the Guru granth sahib. Kirtan and final ardaas follow the ‘pheras’ where everyone stands and participates in it. In the endall those gathered for the auspicious ceremony, bend down and touch their forehead to the floor thereby paying their respect to the Guru Granth Sahib. After the conclusion of the ceremony, everyone proceeds towards langar which should not be mistaken with feast. It is more like Prasad in form of simple food and compulsorily has “Karah” Prasad- the pudding.
