The Bihari wedding commences with Satyanarayan Puja conducted at the Groom’s home. All those who participate in this puja are required to fast for the day. The engagement ceremony in Bihar is called Cheka wherein the couple exchanges rings and the groom’s family presents the bride’s with gifts and sweets. The Bride’s brother makes a visit to the Groom’s house for Tilak ceremony just before the wedding. It symbolizes the acceptance of the holy union by Bride’s family. On this occasion Groom’s family sends Maangtika, Nose ring, toe ring and some gifts for the bride along with turmeric which is ground by the Groom’s mother. After the haldi ceremony prayers to ancestors is organised and is called Dhritdhari and Matripoojan. The final pre-wedding ceremony of Imlighutai involves Groom’s maternal uncle making him hold a betel nut between his teeth which is eaten by his mother signifying that she has taken all bad omens that were to fall on her son on herself.
With this the procession leaves for the wedding venue after Mother of the groom performs an arti of her son. The baraat is welcomed with yet another arti and garlands by the Bride’s family. The bride’s mother carries the arti plate and the ladies throw cow dung behind the groom. Then the wedding follows usual varmala, pheras and Kanyadaan. The sindoor in a Bihari wedding is bright orange coloured unlike the usual maroon sindoor that is seen in Hindu weddings across India. After a heart wrenching vidaai, ceremonies of moohdikhai, chaukachulai and reception follow.
